Dear Valued Client, A Pre-purchase exam is a thorough physical, and if requested, biochemical (bloodwork) examination stating a veterinary opinion of the health of the horse on the day of the exam. The horse is observed under saddled as well as in hand through all gaits. The horse will be observed after a series of flexions, which stress target joints and soft tissue structures to exacerbate any underlying lameness issues. It is the responsibility of the buyer to inform the examining veterinarian (Dr. Nusbaum or Dr. Loomer) the intended use of the animal as well as any pertinent information in the horses history. The buyer must also inform the veterinarian which diagnostics you would like performed if the horse moves past the soundness part of the exam. Please familiarize yourself with the fee schedule listed below. The performing veterinarian will give you an opinion as to whether or not the horse has any indication of problems at the time of the exam. The veterinarian cannot predict the future of any horse. It should be understood that the veterinarian does not issue any warranty on any particular case, and if one is desired, this should be contracted with the seller. Oftentimes, horses will receive a “pass” or “fail” during a pre-purchase exam. It is not PenMar Equine Practice’s policy to follow this terminology; all of the information gained by the veterinarian on the day of the exam will be given to the buyer in order for them to make the best judgement as to the talent, disposition and suitability of the horse- only the buyer is able to decide if these parameters meet his/her satisfaction. Please check the box below that you have read and understand this statement.
